Sikh Prisoner's Hair Forcibly Cut after Protest in Court

Jagmohan Singh Ahuja a Sikh imprisoned for a misdemeanor in Jacksonville Florida Duval County Jail had his hair forcibly cut by jail officers in early July 2008. Judge Russell Healey denied a motion to consider Sikh Religious Rights filed by the public defender on behalf of Jagmohan Singh in Duval County Circuit Court. It is considered a major vioation of the Code of Conduct of the Sikh religion to cut hair. From birth onward the hair considered sacred and kept bound in a turban.

Jagmohan Singh has stated to United Sikhs legal team, "Despite my opposition, my hair and beard were cut even after I made clear my religious beliefs and traditions. This has been very traumatic to me especially because I came to the United States in an attempt to avoid religious persecution."

The Good Wife's Guide

* Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have be thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they get home and the prospect of a good meal is part of the warm welcome needed.
* Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you'll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people.
* Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.
* Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives. Run a dustcloth over the tables.
* During the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too. After all, catering to his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction.
* Minimize all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Encourage the children to be quiet.
* Be happy to see him.
* Greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him.
* Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first - remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.
* Don't greet him with complaints and problems.
* Don't complain if he's late for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through at work.
* Make him comfortable. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or lie him down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him.
* Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.
* Don't ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.
* A good wife always knows her place.

A guide to my view on hair extensions pros and cons

Clip in extensions article

ARTICLE 1
I am writing to share my views with the world on my experience of different hair extensions techniques & why clip on extensions are the best in my opinion.

I am from the u.k and have extremely fine hair and since perming and dying it from a young age I ended up with a very fine head of damaged and lifeless looking locks which never grew. I needed to do something as I worked as a professional model for London's u.k leading glamour and fashion agency. A lot of the girls had extension in and they looked great so I thought that was the way to go. The most popular method seemed to be the strand by strand bonded extension which is very popular in the u.k and the u.s.a. I decided to get mine done at a top uk london salon. The extension application took 5 hours and the cost was 900 and although that was very pricey It was well worth it because they looked amazing. I was booked for many more photo shoots than normal after that and I could not imagine ever going back to having fine straggly split ends. I kept the extension in for the 3 month period as advised and went back to the same salon for them to be removed. This is where it all went wrong. The removal took 2 hours and after it was severely damaged and thinner than before. I was so upset but all I could do is wait and try to use as many good leave in treatments and vitamins I could to try and get it back into some kind of condition.

After about 9 months I was out with a friend in the u.s.a and realised her locks had all of a sudden grown about 18 inches longer so then realised she had also had a full head of extensions done. I started to warn her about the damage that may be done on the removal. She then told me not to worry as she was wearing a clip in hair extensions

So my advice to people wanting to have the bonded hair extension method is to read reviews and do as much research as possible to make sure you are going to the right salon otherwise you may find yourself in the same predicament as I was in.

I now use the clip in hair extensions method. They are perfect for me and they take less than 10 minutes to apply. There are many different sets and sizes available on the web but I found the ultimate extension companies the best for quality and price by far. They supply to the uk and the usa as far as I know and I am pretty sure they also sell all over europe and also australia. They also provide samples for colour matching which is a free service which is good as well. Once clipped in they cause no damage and are completely undetectable. I would not keep mine in for longer than 7 hours or so though as they can start to itch a bit.

I think they look more natural than any other extension methods on the market. Since I have been wearing these clip on extension all of my friends were so amazed they went out and bought there own.

I want everyone to be able to have the chance to see how clip ons can change your life and how they can dramatically improve your confidence. clip in hair extensions. the benefits: they are relatively inexpensive, can be done at home, are reusable, and, with a little practice, can be applied so they look totally natural. If you have very thin, fine hair, you might want to enlist the help of a hairdresser, but other than that, all you need is a rat-tail comb (be careful with that!), and some clips to hold your hair out of the way whilst you attach the clip in extensions. Very easy stuff. One caveat: Do NOT sleep in them, or your hair will get so tangled up in the combs that you will have to cut them out. Ouch. The details of applying the clip in hair extensions are so simple.

Hairpieces and wigs are not a modern invention. In fact, historians have concluded that wigs were worn as many as 6,000 years ago by the Egyptians. The Egyptians used wigs not only as a fashion statement, but also as protection from the sun. Wigs probably reached the height of their popularity in Europe between the 16th and 19th centuries. The vast majority of these wig wearers were male. The wig made its way to America in the 17th century, brought to this country on the heads of British settlers. Men of high social status wore wigs up until about the time of the American Revolution.

People wear hairpieces for many reasons, whether its because of a medical condition that causes hairloss , or even medical treatments that cause hairloss. Men and women wear wigs to cover up baldness. Some people wear wigs for fashion purposes. Many people like to use wefts or extensions to add length or volume to their existing hair. The reasons for wearing hairpieces are as individual and unique as those wear them.

Wigs can be made out of natural human hair, synthetic hair (known as modacryllic fiber hair), animal hair, or a combination of all three. Human hair wigs are superior for their realism and ability to style, but they are very expensive. Animal hair wigs are a more affordable alternative. Animal hair wigs usually come from horses or boars. If you are unsure about whether a wig is natural or synthetic, pull out a strand and light it with a match. Everyone is familiar with the odor of burning human hair. Synthetic hair will burn very quickly and will leave behind tiny hard beads that you can feel with your fingers.

Wigs can be either hand or machine made. Both methods of production can yield realistic, high-quality hairpieces, although hand-made wigs are more expensive. Even synthetic fiber wigs can be made to look as natural in texture, color, sheen, and feel as human hair due to the advances in the production of modacryllic fibers. The common names of some of these fibers are dynel, venicelon, and kanekalon. Synthetic hair has some disadvantages, they are hard to color and to curl with an iron. Many synthetic wigs will melt if they are exposed to heat styling.

Hair used for extensions can also be human, animal, or synthetic. If you plan on coloring the hair, always stick with natural hair, preferable blonde (it can be colored easier). Men's toupees also are made using the same methods and materials as wigs, wefts, and hair extensions.

If my hair is braided, I don’t have to do anything to it.

Yes, you do. First, it’s important to start off with a healthy head of hair, Toure says. If your hair is damaged, you should not wear an extension-braided style.

Stylists recommend a protein treatment, followed by a good conditioner to repair damaged hair before braiding it. If you do wear braids, be sure to wash your hair at least once a week. It’s not OK to go longer than a week. Because you’re not brushing or combing your hair on a daily basis, dirt and oil have more time to build up.

Braids are a good alternative when you want to give your hair a break from constant heat styling — curling irons and flat irons — but don’t overdo it! Depending on the style, most experts recommend wearing your braids anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months.

It’s cold outside, so I have to wear a hat almost everyday.

“Hats can be very damaging to hair, especially for men, so it’s important to keep hair moisturized [with a light oil] or to wear hats with natural fibers,” says Ousmane Toure, owner of the AfriCentrics Braids, Locs & Barber Salon in Baltimore.

* Greasing the scalp will help with “dry-scalp“ syndrome.

No, it won’t. “If your scalp is excessively dry, applying oil to it will not help — you may have a different problem,” Alexis says. A flaky scalp is sometimes caused by a type of yeast overgrowth on the skin, resulting in a condition known as sebhorreic dermatitis.

Since scalp is skin, it’s susceptible to the same conditions as skin on the other parts of the body — acne, folliculitis or impetigo. It’s best to see a dermatologist if your dry scalp persists.

I can wash my hair every day.

It depends on the hair type and texture. Very kinky to curly hair tends to be drier. If your hair is natural — no chemical process has been added to your hair — it’s OK to rinse it everyday in the shower as long as a light conditioner is used, says Tyama Arawole, a natural hair care consultant with clients in Washington, D.C., and New York.

“Natural hair loves water, but it’s still important to keep it protected,” she says. The extra curly hair cuticle — or outer layer — makes it more difficult for the oil secreted from the scalp to reach the ends of the hair, so don’t forget to moisturize the hair, she says.

For relaxed hair — chemically processed for a straighter look — washing the hair once weekly is recommended. That’s why it’s important to lay off the heavy, petrolatum-based (petroleum jelly) products, Alexis says. “Excessive washing can dry out relaxed hair, but you don’t want to weigh it down with heavy product,” he adds. Use light moisturizers and avoid excessive heat. And when you do wash it, make sure you use a deep conditioner.

* Heavy, oily products are best for my hair because it‘s so dry in winter.

Back away from the heavy products. It makes sense that people want to grab the heavy body lotions and creams to soothe their dry skin during the winter, but it doesn’t work for their hair, says dermatologist Andrew Alexis, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Skin of Color Center at St. Luke‘s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City.

“Greasy products may actually [clog hair follicles and] cause other problems including scalp folliculitis and acne on the forehead and temples [pomade acne],” he says.

Silicone-based products are best for use as daily hair moisturizers. (Hint: The label won’t say silicone. Look out for dimethicone as a key ingredient.)

Black Hair Care Guide: How to Winterize Your Hair

With hundreds of hair care products on the market, making the right choice can be confusing. But caring for ethnic hair comes with its own challenges.

African-American hair is more prone to breakage and dryness — especially in the winter. It may look tougher, but it’s actually more fragile than Caucasian hair.

Trying to find the right products, choosing the right styles and sticking to a maintenance schedule can prove a hassle.

And some of the “tried-and-true” advice for other ethnic groups is just plain wrong for African-American hair.

So let’s demystify some of those common misconceptions:
